“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
— Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom

Mandela’s words apply not just to relationships among people and races — they apply to our families, our marriages, our parenting. We are indeed born with a drive to attach and to love. Being in healthy community with others is important to our growth and development, whether we are nine days old or ninety years old.
As we remember Mandela’s leadership, courage, and the blessings he brought South Africa and the world on Dec. 5, the third anniversary of his death, let’s also recommit ourselves to learning, living, and teaching love in every aspect of our lives.
